Rochester Academy Benefits From Foster Grandparents

The five Foster Grandparents serving at the Rochester Science and Math Academy are all immigrants from Somalia. They include a former lawyer/judge, business owner, and carpenter.

Volunteering in a new country offers many challenges, not only to the Somali volunteers but to the children they serve. At the same time, being a Foster Grandparent provides the volunteers an opportunity to earn a better living because of the small stipend they receive. In addition, these volunteers are positioned to help Somali children gain a better education and to appreciate their own heritage.
