RSVP volunteer brings children a half million smiles!

Greater St. Cloud Area (Minnesota) RSVP volunteer, Will Kalmoe of Becker has brought an estimated half million smiles to children over the past 15 years! Since 1998 he has worked in his home woodshop to cut over 56,000 individual toy wood blocks. These building blocks were designed in 7 different shapes to spark children’s imagination.

The woodblocks started their life through Mr. Kalmoe as donated, untreated lumber from a wide variety of donors over the years. For many of those years the wood was collected from donors by Clear Lake RSVP volunteer, Jack Kufner who brought the wood to Will’s shop for creation. Most recently the wood has been donated by Tri County Lumber of Clear Lake, Country Lumber of Becker, Bass Construction, Inc. and Galen Keyes, a St. Cloud RSVP volunteer.

The blocks then moved to the Whitney Center Woodshop in St. Cloud where RSVP volunteers from WACOSA painted and bagged the blocks for distribution to children in need through local human service agencies in Sherburne, Benton and Stearns Counties.
Will has recently retired from his volunteer Master Woodblock Maker position, but he has left enough blocks prepared to supply requesting agencies for another 2-3 years. In total, an estimated 4,500 children have received with Will’s blocks. With at least 100 smiles per child as they play with their blocks over time, that makes nearly a half million smiles! Thank you, Will, for creating so much joy!
